Rodney Mullen Debuts New Tricks in 360 Degree Liminal Video

Before we discuss his new video, there is one thing that you need to know about Rodney Mullen’s contribution to skateboarding:

He Changed Everything.

Did you grasp that? Good. Now let us begin.

Twelve years since his last release, Rodney Mullen, California skateboarding legend and myth,  today released his psychedelic “Liminal.”

Vogue fashion photographer Steven Sebring has created in his revolutionary 360 studio an edit of modern skate artistry. The artistic “Liminal”  showcases Mullen’s signature creativity in several never seen before moves.

The new video was shot in “4D” by Sebring, an award-winning photographer and filmmaker. The Revolution System is a silver, 24-foot  dome that functions as “a camera you go inside of.” The subject stands at the center of the dome and is shot from 100 surrounding cameras.

For 12 years it’s seemed the godfather of skateboarding had retired in the sport. After years of skating that was asymmetrical, with his left foot forward and right foot back, the Bones Brigade star endured an injury-related fusion of hipbone and his femur. This left him unable to skate and  painfully crippled.

Mullen turned his focus to less demanding interests – Linux and open source computing. He found a passionate link between skateboarders and computer hackers – that both communities flourish on high risk innovation, while sharing their findings for the betterment of the community. Mullen shortly came in contact with like minded innovator Krisztina “Z” Holly – originator of the first TEDx. In 2012, Holly convinced Mullen to talk at TEDx on innovation and imagination.

Still, Mullen remained relentless in trying to find a way to get back on his skateboard. After 8 years of trying an array of brutal, self-myofascial release methods, his femur bone broke free from its constraint.

I was never here. We never met. This never happened.
