The event will take place in Cardiff Reef in the beach community of Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Both novice and professional surfers enjoy the waves produced at The Reef all year round. Since its humble beginnings in the 1950s with just a few surfers taking advantage of the waves, The Reef has become one of the most popular surfing destinations in San Diego County.

The consistent and smooth wave shapes of Cardiff Reef are what make it a popular surfing spot. It is also a favorite location for those visitors who do not surf the waves. About 50 yards from shore, a flat rock reef is revealed at low tide. Locals and tourists alike enjoy exploring the tide pools here.

One of the permanent exhibits features a timeline of surfboards from the wooden boards of the early 1900s to the modern boards of today. The building is in downtown Oceanside in proximity to the pier. Surfing has come a long way in its history and has spawned offshoot sports, such as skateboarding and snowboarding. You can learn all about it at the Surf Museum.

Swami’s Surfing Association

Swami’s Surfing Association Inc. (SSA) was established in 1964 with the purpose of improving and supporting the environment and the beach community. SSA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization started by surfers in Encinitas. Today, the club boasts a membership of more than 300 surfers participating in community service events, leading ocean preservation efforts and riding waves together. Most of all, they believe in carrying on the Aloha spirit.

The SSA is named after Swami’s Reef, which is an internationally known surfing spot that is also located in Encinitas. Since the hermitage and grounds of the Self-Realization Fellowship ashram built in 1937 overlook this reef point, it was named after Swami Paramahansa Yogananda. Swami’s Reef is known to be a great example to the surfing population at large of excellent surfing etiquette, and it hosts surfers of all levels from absolute beginners to advanced surfers.

The SSA currently participates and sponsors programs like the Blind Surf Program, Adopt-a-Beach, middle and high school student scholarships, middle and high school surf teams, and help for disabled Vietnam veterans. To make sure these programs are successful, the SSA membership dedicates hundreds of volunteer man-hours. And, there are many benefits experienced by the recipients and local community. By supporting SSA’s Return to the Reef, you are supporting all of the good they do for the community.

Each year, the Swami’s Surfing Association’s Return to the Reef contest is a highlight of the Coalition of Surfing Clubs contest series. Not only because of the gorgeous Cardiff Reef venue but also due to the camaraderie and fun.
